Teen curfews?

Are teen curfews useful? Should a 13-year-old, for example, be allowed to stay out until midnight on the weekend? On a school night? Some parents say curfews don't really matter because a teen can run into problems anytime during a given 24-hour period. What do you think? What purpose do curfews serve? And if they have some value, what do you think are reasonable and age-appropriate? At what age shouldn't a teen be subject to a curfew? What should be the consequences for breaking a curfew?

I've found that teen curfews actually are very effective until the teen hits about 17 or is a senior in high school. Then the curfew rules start to disintegrate.
But cellphones have really helped solidify teen curfews. The kid has to call if they are going to be late past their curfew and if they have a cellphone that is pretty easy. Of course, punishment as in you're grounded when teens miss curfews also works well.

I have found that a curfew is effective and if curfew is broken, the teen cannot go out the next time he/she wants to. This makes them WANT to be on time more than not. They have to weigh how much staying out past curfew is worth to them. Cell phones help keep the kids in touch, like, "Mom, I'm on my way home but we had to stop for gas....got caught by a train...have to drop off so-&-so first...." They may be a little late, but you won't worry as much. :-)

I never used curfews with our children, they just found out the hard way that if you stay up too late and have to arise early it isn't a good thing.

Is it me or am I the only one that thinks young teenagers have no business being out that late without a parent. Call me old fashioned, but my children will not be allowed to be out that late when they are 13,14, or 15. School night or not.
